“Movies are a valuable tool for teaching in many disciplines. They can be used to help students better understand and appreciate fiction and non-fiction works. And they can help them to express their own ideas more freely and uniquely.” Joe Coencas
A graduate of Queens College and New York University Tisch School of the Arts, Joe has taught reading, writing and film for more than 25 years in public and private schools in New York City and Long Island. In addition, he served as communications director for The Fund for NYC Public Education, and was co-screenwriter of A Very Natural Thing (1974), a New Line Cinema release. His article, “How Movies Work for Secondary School Students with Special Needs,” was published in the English Journal in March 2007.
As an independent life coach and tutor, Joe helps students with special needs make a smooth transition from high school to college by working with them to develop and practice a variety of organizational, time management and stress-reducing strategies.
