MENTOR SUPPORT OUTLINE

The Mentor Support model will be an ongoing classroom based support which is aligned with Standard Based Instruction. It develops high quality classroom practices which improve student learning. Its goal is to create a reflective and collaborative learning model which will enhance a teacher’s ability to handle classroom behaviors and academic practices.

Role of the Mentor:

  • Provides resources and professional development
  • Supports effective classroom management, planning, instruction and professionalism reinforcing attitudes and behaviors of effective teachers
  • Highlights student motivation and rapport
  • Shares best practices for both content and pedagogy
  • Provides valuable feedback and support
  • Helps create a collaborative partnership
  • Focuses on a reflective model where teacher can continually look at appropriate practices, evaluate and assess growth
  • Meets with teacher at least two hours a week, planning and executing a six week course of study. (Topics to be chosen from teacher based needs and school based requirements. Reading and Writing workshop will be highlighted.)
  • Debrief with teacher on a regular basis
  • Collaborate with staff developers, coaches and administrators when appropriate
  • Provide ongoing updates which include topics addressed, cycles followed, issues and successes

Role of the Teacher:

  • Focus on creating and maintaining an effective environment for student learning
  • Engage and support all students, using a variety of instructional strategies and resources to respond to students’ diverse needs
  • Assess student learning/plan instruction; use strategies to provide for second language learners
  • Maintain a reflective journal as a place to record observations, analyze experiences and reflect on and interpret practices over time
  • Willingness to work side by side with mentor, planning six week course of study to be used as a platform for learning

Assessment and Record Keeping:

  • Weekly logs will be kept to cover successes, challenges and action plans
  • Updates for monthly summary of process and plans for ongoing cycles
  • Student alignment with school assessment: ECLAS, Dibbles, writing analysis
  • Teachers’ reflective journal
