Allyson Nusser
Allyson Nusser is an independent literacy consultant who specializes in teaching reading and writing workshop at the upper elementary and middle school level. Allyson started her teaching career as a Teach for America Corps Member in Compton, CA, where she taught fourth grade. After moving back to the New York area, she served as both a literacy teacher and literacy coach in Brooklyn middle schools. In these roles, her classroom served as a model for citywide inter-visitations focusing on demonstrating balanced literacy to upper elementary and middle school educators in other regions throughout the NYC DOE. Allyson helped design citywide classroom libraries for the mayor's initiative, and facilitated curricular development and backwards planning among literacy teachers at her school. Allyson provided staff development to literacy teachers focusing on establishing routines for launching reading and writing workshop, planning mini-lessons, conferences and assessing student progress.
As a consultant, Allyson has led various workshops and institutes throughout the tri-state area focusing on reading and writing instruction for upper elementary and middle school teachers. More recently, she has worked as a literacy consultant helping teachers align their curriculum to the Common Core State Standards. Topics include tailoring reading and writing strategy instruction (whole and small group) to support the common core, the role of literacy in the science and social studies classroom, using read aloud to support comprehension of informational text, and using formative assessment to drive instruction.
