Dorothy Barnhouse is a literacy consultant working in elementary, middle, and high schools in New York City and in districts across the U.S. and abroad. She started teaching through a fellowship at the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project while studying writing at Columbia University. Dorothy is the author of Readers Front and Center (Stenhouse 2014), about conferring and small group instruction, and co-author with Vicki Vinton of What Readers Really Do (Heinemann 2012), a book that supports instruction around close reading. A regular presenter at national conferences, Dorothy works with teachers, coaches and administrators in lab sites, study groups and one-to-one in-class coaching. Her current work can help schools align curriculum and instruction to meet the Common Core State Standards.
