Maureen Morriss
Maureen Morriss has had extensive teaching and administrative experience as an elementary classroom teacher grades K through 8, a literacy consultant, a principal, published author and a professor at a teacher education university. Her work has always been directed to finding the most appropriate ways to facilitate literacy learning for children. She is passionate about developing a love of reading and writing in children and adults and enjoys the opportunity to work in classrooms to consolidate her work.
Most recently she has been working as a consultant in New York City, Montgomery County, Maryland, West Palm Beach Florida and Fairfax County, Virginia. In this capacity she has coached teachers in their classrooms, worked with teams of teachers in schools and at the regional level, and supported principals and assistant principals. She has been instrumental in assisting with systemic change related to literacy programs in at district and regional levels in New York City. Maureen has presented many workshops to a range of audiences in all elements of Balanced Literacy, Educational Change Processes, Integrated Curriculum, and Mentoring both here as part of her consultancy work and across the world in schools and at international and national conferences. The most recent formal recognition of her work was the presentation of the ALEA Medal 2006 from the Australian Literacy Educators’ Association (A.L.E.A.) for her outstanding service and contribution to literacy education in Australia and overseas.
