Shira Katz
Shira Katz has over fifteen years experience teaching and learning with students and teachers in the New York City public schools and beyond. Before becoming a literacy coach and Social Studies staff developer, she taught Humanities to middle and high school students with a broad range of abilities in District Two. Most recently she has worked as a literacy coach in a middle school on Long Island and as a school coach for a small high school in Brooklyn, as well as a facilitator of workshops around the country.Inspired by the possibilities of the classroom and the resilience of young people, Shira has provided support, skills and resources to countless educators, as well as created professional development experiences on an array of topics. These topics include: Reading and Writing Workshop, Inquiry in the Social Studies Classroom, Notebooking Across the Curriculum, Backwards Planning, Reading and Writing in the Content Areas, Accountable Talk, Formative Assessment/Authentic Assessment and Strategies for Differentiation. Shira brings her passion for team building and collaboration to all her work, leaving teachers with both deeper theoretical understandings and practical applications of the topic at hand.
