Susan Markman
Susan Markman is a mentor teacher and consultant in child development and behavior. She combines thirty years of experience in schools with cutting edge information from the fields of neuroscience and mindfulness. She offers tools for building children’s resilience and capacity for learning, through improved self-regulation and executive functioning – tools that help kids to calm down, focus their attention, think before reacting, follow directions, cooperate, and make good decisions. Her work bridges the gap between scientific research and classroom practice. School leaders along with new and veteran teachers learn effective ways to improve classroom management, address difficult behaviors, reduce stress, and increase availability for instruction.
Her consultation corresponds to Common Core Standards related to Social Emotional Learning and Development. In the last five years she has focused on promoting understanding of how trauma, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and toxic stress impact learning and behavior. Much of that work has been in Universal PreK and 3K for All settings, but is designed to support Early Childhood - Grade 6 teachers, principals and educational directors, guidance counselors, social workers, and related service providers. It is based in her own Quiet Power™ model and draws from the work of such educational leaders as CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning), and UCLA’s Mindsight Institute.
